Emulate example of AFCON 1965 squad — Akufo-Addo

The 2016 Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has urged the next generation of Ghanaian footballers to take inspiration from members of Ghana's 1965 AFCON squad who defended the honour of the nation with distinction.

According to Nana Akufo-Addo, the triumph of the 1965 AFCON squad 50 years ago in Tunisia won the nation a lot of respect globally, with the Black Stars becoming a footballing powerhouse on the back of those performances.

Nana Akufo-Addo made the call yesterday when the members of the 1965 AFCON squad presented him with an official invitation to their Golden Jubilee celebration which takes place on December 3 at the Sun Lodge Hotel in Accra.

Kumasi Asante Kotoko and AshantiGold will battle for this year’s SIC Nyemitei-SWAG Cup match later this month in Kumasi, Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) president, Kwabena Yeboah, has announced.

At a press briefing in Accra yesterday, Mr Yeboah said the decision to choose Kotoko and AshantiGold to compete in the November 29 encounter at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium was based on merit and current performance.

According to him, Kotoko was chosen as being the most successful team in the history of the competition after winning the coveted trophy 13 times out of 19 appearances with Ashgold winning it four times in addition to being the current Premier League champions.

Masa-Ud Didi Dramani, the coach of Ghana's Under-20 female football team, say they are determined to claim victory over Ethiopia as they host them in the return and final leg of their Women's World Cup (WWC) qualifier in Kumasi on Sunday.

Two weeks ago, the Princesses gave up a 1-0 lead and fought to draw 2-2 in the first leg in Addis Ababa, but Coach Dramani says they will not commit the same mistakes that nearly cost them as they are bent on qualifying for the 2016 U-20 WWC in Papua New Guinea.

"We went to Addis Ababa hoping to keep a clean sheet, but that did not happen and we were forced to fight for a drawn result. The mistakes we committed have been well noted and corrected. In Kumasi, our game plan is not just to win, but also to maintain a clean sheet at home," Coach Dramani told the Graphic Sports.

Breast cancer awareness health walk in Sekondi-Takoradi

Various keep fit clubs, students and other identifiable groups from the Sekondi-Takoradi municipality, last Saturday participated in a health walk designed to create awareness and educate the public about the prevention and cure of breast cancer.

 The exercise, organised by   Breast Care International (BCI) and Peace and Love Hospital, started with a few keep fit clubs at 6 am from   the Jubilee Park in Takoradi, though, Effia-nkwanta, Adiembra,Essikado and Essipon.

 The number, however, swelled up as many others joined in the walk, which was on the theme,‘‘Fighting for Breast Cancer: Free Future,’’

Former Black Stars striker, Augustine Ahinful, has appealed to supporters of Accra Hearts of Oak to rally  behind newly appointed Hearts of Oak manager, Kenichi Yatsuhashi to enable him realise his ambition of restoring the club to its winning ways.

In an interview with the Graphic Sports, Ahinful, whose striking prowess endeared him to soccer fans in Ghana during his days with Ashgold, said considering the ambitions and determination of Kenichi Yatsuhashi, he would achieve much success for Hearts if the fans offered him the needed support.

“I believe he can accomplish every task he promised the club. You can see he showed character during the press conference, and I think from the positive way he sounded, he is going to win many silver wares for Hearts as he promised.
