Experiencing Ghana in 7days with Citi FM

About 80 Ghanaians set off for a 7-day trip that gave them a rare opportunity to experience Ghana on the Citi FM Heritage Caravan from Monday March 7 to Sunday March 13.

The Heritage Caravan forms part of the station’s Heritage Month initiative, held annually in Ghana’s birth month, March.

The Heritage Caravan’s aims among others to create a platform for Citi FM to engage listeners and also get Ghanaians to explore other parts of the country, see interesting tourist sites and connect with the authentic Ghanaian Heritage.

The caravan travelled from the Greater Accra Region to the Volta, Eastern, Ashanti, Northern, Brong Ahafo, Western and Central regions. Every stop had a story, a lesson and excitement.

The first main stop was at the majestic Adaklu Mountains in the Volta Region, famed for its unique wildlife. The caravan saw the mountain in its full glory and learned about Adaklu, the wildlife, the traditions and the people.

From Adaklu, the caravan moved to New Abirem which was quite revealing. The history of Ghana’s cocoa, the story of Adjeikrom and that of the struggle for independence were told and learned with more depth.

Adjeikrom is a village founded by the father of the legendary Ako Adjei of the Big Six fame. According to historians, it was in this village that Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah and his team met to plan the fight for Ghana’s independence.

The caravan then set off to the Ashanti Region. The journey was heartbreaking because of the nature of the roads. However, the sight of the statue of Yaa Asantewaa, the warrior queen, and the stories of Lake Bosomtwe, Bonwire, Adanwomase and the Bobiri Forest Reserve and Butterfly Sanctuary, had cheered the team up.

In Kumasi, members of the caravan visited the Rattray Park and relived the rich Ashanti culture and history at the seat of the King of the Ashanti People, Manhyia Palace.

The experience in Tamale was remarkable and unforgettable as the crew was treated to rich cultural display organised and hosted by the Chief of Tamale, Naa Dakpemah Alhassan Dawuni.

Boabeng Fiema Monkey in the Nkoranza North District of the Brong Ahafo Region was the next destination.

Here, the Heritage Caravan had the rare opportunity of feeding some of the over 2,000 Mona and Colobus monkeys at the sanctuary in the dense tropical forest.

The team spent the night in Sunyani and proceeded to Takoradi, the Western Regional Capital on Friday.

The journey was through Kumasi to Obuasi and then to the over 12 Assin towns, and joined the main Accra-Takoradi road at Yamoransa.

The caravan spent the night in Takoradi after the 9 hour journey from Tamale and visited Nzulezo the following day.

It was a wonderful experience at Nzulezo, the village on stilts, 90km west of Takoradi. The spectacular scenery of the 400-year old stilt propped water settlement, built on Lake Amanzule, stands out as a magnificent interplay between man and his environment.

The climax of the 7-day tour, took the caravan to one of the UNESCO Heritage sites in Ghana, the Elmina Castle.

It was revealed that over 500,000 slaves were traded in Ghana alone at the height of the slave trade and that only one out of three slaves made it to the final destination.

Kofi Akpabli, the celebrated Communication and Tourism Specialist, was on the Heritage Caravan. According to him “the Citi FM Heritage Caravan was an opportunity for learning, fun and meeting people.
