Only two genders exist, marriage is between a man and a woman – President Mahama declares 

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his stance on traditional family values, declaring that there are only two genders—man and woman.

His remarks, made during a clergy fellowship in Accra on Friday, February 28, 2025, reinforced his commitment to what he described as the fundamental principles of Ghanaian society.

"I believe in the principles and values that only two genders exist—man and woman. And that marriage is between a man and a woman," Mahama asserted, drawing nods of approval from the religious leaders in attendance.

The president also revealed ongoing consultations with the Speaker of Parliament to reintroduce the Proper Family Values Bill, which seeks to prohibit LGBTQ+ activities in the country.

According to Mahama, the bill—previously passed by the eighth Parliament—should be championed by the government rather than as a private member’s motion.

"It is my hope that the consultation will lead to a renewed Proper Family Values Bill," he stated.

The bill, which criminalises the promotion, advocacy, and funding of LGBTQ+ activities, was passed by Parliament but did not receive presidential assent under President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration.

Economic priorities and national development

Beyond his stance on social and moral issues, Mahama also addressed Ghana’s economic challenges, outlining his administration’s commitment to restoring stability and creating jobs.

"Our immediate priority is to stabilise the economy and restore confidence in Ghana. We will stabilise our currency, bring down interest rates, reduce inflation, cut the deficit, and improve our financial standing," he stated.

He reassured the clergy that his government had already begun implementing strategic measures to attract investors and eliminate wasteful government spending.

Mahama also emphasised his 24-hour economy policy, describing it as a transformative initiative aimed at creating jobs, particularly in business development, agriculture, agribusiness, and manufacturing.

"A nation that cannot feed itself cannot prosper. That is why we are making aggressive interventions in the agricultural sector. By modernising farming techniques, investing in agro-processing, and supporting our farmers, we will lay a solid foundation for a prosperous future," he added.

Call for unity and prayer

Quoting Ecclesiastes 9:11, Mahama emphasised the role of divine guidance in leadership, urging religious leaders to continue supporting his administration with prayers and moral counsel.

"As Christian leaders, you are the spiritual backbone of our country. Your guidance, counsel, and intercession will be instrumental in ensuring that we stay on the right path," he said.

He further reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with the church to foster national unity, development, and moral uprightness.

"May God grant us the wisdom and strength to build a country that truly reflects His glory. May God bless our homeland Ghana and make our nation strong and prosperous," Mahama declared.
