West African Gas Pipeline resumes gas supply to Tema after successful maintenance

The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has successfully resumed natural gas transportation from Nigeria to Ghana, Togo, and Benin following the completion of critical pipeline maintenance activities.

The maintenance project, which spanned four weeks, involved offshore pipeline cleaning and inspection, subsea valve replacements, and other essential works across multiple locations. During this period, gas supply to Tema, Cotonou, and Lomé was temporarily shut down to facilitate the works.

Speaking during an assessment visit to WAPCo’s Tema Regulating and Metering Station, the Director General of the West African Gas Pipeline Authority (WAGPA), Chafari Kanya Hanawa, commended the team for completing the project ahead of schedule.

WAPCo’s Managing Director, Michelle Burkett, praised the technical teams and stakeholders for their dedication in completing the project efficiently and safely.

“I want to congratulate every member of our team for their dedication and professionalism. This was a complex project, and your hard work, even in the face of challenges, made it a success. While some countries experienced temporary disruptions due to the shutdown of the laterals, our teams worked tirelessly to ensure that maintenance was carried out swiftly and safely. The results speak for themselves, and I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve achieved,” she said.

She further expressed gratitude to the governments of Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, and Benin, as well as maritime and regulatory authorities, customers, shippers, gas off-takers, host communities, and shareholders for their collaboration in ensuring the project’s success.

The completion of the maintenance works guarantees the continued safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP). WAPCo reaffirmed its commitment to providing high-quality energy services while upholding the highest safety standards in the sub-region.

The successful resumption of gas transportation is expected to boost power generation in Ghana and improve the energy supply to key industries and households.
