Volta Hoteliers to champion aggressive tourism promotion, call for tax reforms

The Volta Region branch of the Ghana Hoteliers Association has announced plans to embark on a vigorous tourism promotion campaign aimed at unlocking the region’s full economic potential.

The Chairman of the Association, Henry Ampah Johnson, revealed that this initiative would be preceded by the establishment of a viable welfare scheme for hoteliers to enhance confidence and operational stability.

Speaking in an interview in Ho, Mr. Johnson disclosed that the association currently has 229 members, with efforts underway to increase membership to 350 by the end of the year.

“Our firm stance to support tourism promotion is based on the numerous and captivating natural settings in the region which are all underutilised,” he stated.

Restoring natural attractions

Mr. Johnson highlighted the association’s commitment to restoring the natural status of the Wli Waterfalls, which has seen a decline in patronage due to the replacement of natural tree bridges with artificial structures.

“We are poised to restore Wli Waterfalls to its original state because the artificial bridges have discouraged visitors,” he noted.

He also cited Amedzofe, Ghana’s highest human settlement, stressing that enhancing recreational activities in the area would boost tourism.

“Amedzofe’s autumnal weather and the captivating Gemi Mountain are major assets. Providing diverse recreational options will make it an even more attractive destination,” he explained.

The association also aims to develop and promote other key attractions, including Tagbo Falls at Liati-Wote and the picturesque Avatime-Biakpa township.

Boosting tourism numbers

Mr. Johnson lamented Ghana’s low annual tourist arrivals, which stand at one million, compared to seven million in South Africa.

“We must market our tourist sites more aggressively to the outside world while also promoting domestic tourism,” he emphasised.

He assured that the association is ready to collaborate with the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) to create more jobs for the youth and position the region as a leading tourism destination.

“Our tourist sites must not only serve as funeral grounds,” he remarked.

Call for tax reforms

Beyond tourism promotion, Mr. Johnson called for a review of multiple taxes burdening the hospitality sector. He proposed a "one-stop tax" system to simplify payments and encourage compliance.

“The corporate tax, COVID tax, municipal/district assembly operational license, environmental protection tax, and the Food and Drugs Authority tax are not helping the smooth operation of the hospitality industry,” he asserted.

The Volta Region branch of the Ghana Hoteliers Association is determined to redefine the tourism landscape, advocating for policy changes and strategic investments to enhance the region’s appeal and economic contributions.
