Major-General Sakyi gets top UN appointment

Major-General Delali Johnson Sakyi of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has been appointed as Chief Military Observer and Head of Mission for the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP).

Major-Gen. Sakyi succeeds Major-General Young-Bum Choi of the Republic of Korea, who completed his two-year assignment on June 16, 2014.

A statement issued by the United Nations Information Centre said the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, announced the appointment of Major-Gen. Sakyi at the UN Headquarters, New York, last Tuesday.

It said the Secretary-General expressed his appreciation to Major-Gen. Choi for his contribution to United Nations Peacekeeping.

The statement said with more than 35 years of military command and staff experience at national and international levels, Major-Gen. Sakyi recently served as Force Commander for the United Nations Mission in South Sudan. 

“He has held command and staff positions in the GAF, including Assistant Commandant of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Junior Division, and Commander of the Army Combat Training School,” it said.

It said Major-Gen. Sakyi’s peacekeeping experience included Abidjan Sector Commander of the United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire from 2008 to 2009 and Commander of the Ghana contingent in four UN and two ECOWAS peacekeeping operations.

“Major-Gen. Sakyi has a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration and is a graduate of the Command and Staff College, Accra, the Army High Command Course, Army Command College, Nanjing, China, and the ECOWAS Senior Mission Leaders Course, Abuja, Nigeria,” the statement added.
