
ECOWAS Naval Chiefs call for enhanced cooperation to tackle maritime security challenges
The Chiefs of Naval Staff from ECOWAS member countries have underscored the importance of increased collaboration to improve maritime security in the West African sub-region and across Africa.
During a meeting in Cabo Verde, the Naval Chiefs, along with other stakeholders, agreed that maritime security threats in the sub-region and on the African continent must be addressed comprehensively to facilitate trade and economic activities.
The meeting focused on the effective utilization of the Yaoundé Architecture Regional Information System (YARIS), an information-sharing platform for maritime law enforcement agencies in Africa. The discussions also aimed to address staffing and information-sharing challenges between ECOWAS Maritime Coordination Centres and Member States' National Maritime Operational Centres.
YARIS connects the inter-regional Coordination Centre (ICC) with the Regional Maritime Security Centre for Central Africa (CRESMAC) and the Regional Maritime Security Centre for West Africa (CRESMAO), providing a crucial coordination and information-sharing structure.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Chief of Naval Staff of Carbo Verde, Commander Armindo António da Graça said West Africa and the entire African continent were saddled with numerous maritime security challenges such as piracy and human trafficking which required an innovative and adaptability approach to tackle.
“The threats we face are dynamic and constantly evolving requiring flexible and innovative responses," he stated.
He stressed the need for ECOWAS countries to strengthen cooperation in the area of information sharing , joint operations and a coordinated maritime security strategy.
The ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs , Peace and Security, Abdel-Fatau Musah, said maritime sector played a crucial role in economic development of ECOWAS member countries and therefore called for more investment in the sector to ensure safe waters for the promotion of economic activities.
