Big prize awaits U-13 Milo Marathon winner

The biggest marathon event on the calendar of the Ghana Education Service (GES) , the Milo Marathon has been launched by Nestle Ghana Limited, the official sponsors of the race at a ceremony in Accra.

The event which has the theme, “Every Champion Starts By Taking a First Step” will  be held on September 21, 2015  to coincide with  the Founders’ Day celebrations.

The winner of this year’s junior race will  take home  a whopping  GH¢5,000.00 while the first and second runners-up will also receive GH¢2,000.00 and GH¢1,000.00 respectively.

Over 2000 schoolchildren (both from public and private schools), under the direction of the GES are expected to take part in the marathon which has an estimated number of 10,000 runners this year.

There will be a 42.2 km race for adults; 15km race for U–15 schoolchildren  as well as a 5km race which is non – competitive.

The 15 kilometres race will start at the Azumah Nelson Sport Complex, while the 42 kilometres race for adults will start from the Junction Mall through Nungua Barrier and end at the Dansoman Keep Fit Club grounds.

Speaking at the launch, the Human Resource Manager of Nestle Ghana Limited,  Ms Antoinette Arkoh,  stressed the company’s commitment to encourage young children to aspire to get to the ultimate through sports.

She further disclosed that an amount of GH¢200,000 Cedis  in cash and product prizes would be given out this year adding that  the proceeds of this year’s marathon  would be used to provide shoes  for underprivileged children in the country.

Launching the event, the Director–General of Basic Schools of the GES , Mr Stephen Adu, expressed gratitude to Nestle Ghana Limited through its brand MILO® for the continuos support it had provided on various platforms to assist in the development of  talents in sports in the country.

 “We, as an institution, once again wish to lend our unflinching support to the organisers of the race. For us, this is the way to go once again. It is an opportunity for a nation to keep fit and benefit from all the good things that come with the marathon. The passion of seeing the young, adolescents, and the old and all different professionals on one stage gives us joy hence the need to give  the company all the support it needs in this direction,” he added

The winner of the adult race would  receive GH¢15, 000.00 cash. First and second runners-up would also collect GH¢5,000.00 and GH¢3,000.00 respectively.
