What prevents GES, govt from making all schools Category A?

I am stunned when I hear the Ghana Education Service (GES) categorising schools.

It is true that some schools, particularly those colonial schools established long ago, have good infrastructure, and so in terms of facilities, they are ahead of the newer schools.

What prevents the GES and the government from making all schools Category A schools?

Just simply categorising schools, with no basis, is discriminatory and must stop.

Schools that are categorised as A and B are those with enough facilities that continue to benefit from government infrastructure, while smaller and deprived schools have infrastructure deficits.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), over the years, continues to conduct examinations for these categories of schools without any discrimination, irrespective of the category you belong to.

WAEC never conducts examinations for categories A and B, and then a separate set of examinations for C and D schools.

They all write the same exams.

The categorisation is based on academic performance and more importantly, infrastructure. Ironically, if the so-called category A and B schools have the infrastructure, while C and D schools have deficits, how does GES expect all schools to perform in the same examinations?

I urge the government to pay attention to the less endowed schools to improve facilities there. What is wrong if we develop facilities in all schools?

Some of these category A and B schools have facilities in excess.

The discrepancy between these categories of schools is too vast and this gap must be bridged by the government and GES.

Woefully, during the introduction of Computerised School Selection & Placement System, all parents wanted their wards to go to category A and B schools.

This must stop.

Another disturbing issue is that in the Computerised School Selection & Placement System, students who obtain good grades from junior high schools are selected and sent to category A and B schools’ while those with low grades are posted to  less endowed schools.

It is a plus, if the government and GES can beat their chest with pride that all senior high schools are Category A schools.

The time has come to stop these discriminatory attitudes and derogatory terms towards these less endowed schools.
