DJ Yoga champions Afro Trap music

In Ghana, George Darko is known for the introduction of Burger Highlife, Reggie Rockstone for Hiplife and it seems DJ Yoga of Breeze FM wants to toe their line to be a pioneer of another music genre.

DJ Yoga,26, real name, Bernard Boateng is currently championing Afro Trap music (Trap music) which he describes as a version of HipHop.

According to Wikipedia, Trap music is a music genre that originated in the early 1990s in the Southern United States. It is typified by its aggressive lyrical content and sound, where the instrumentals are propelled by 808 kick drums or heavy extended sub-bass lines, double-time, triple-time and other faster time division hi-hats, layered synthesisers, and "cinematic" strings.

In a chat with Showbiz on Monday, DJ Yoga said he is currently working on a mix-tape which he calls the Afro Trap Music.

“Trap Music originated from the United States of America but what makes mine different is the fusion of Ghanaian instrumental into the beat.

“Trap Music is a version of Hip Hop which is high tempo party rap music. It is like Hip Hop Azonto if you want to narrow it down. I realised that Ghanaians love Trap music so I decided to bring it down to their level by recording it with African instrumentals, beats and lyrics they can relate to”, he stated.

The mix tape, he said is to support up and coming Hip Hop artistes and it features artistes such as 2 Keys and Tuckman.

He added that he has already released two songs which are doing very well and the third is ready for “consumers of well-cooked Hip Hop tunes”.

“The previous songs received massive response from the lovers of Trap Music and I’m currently working on the third one which features Mr  Eazi. I also have another one with D Black and an upcoming artiste. I know they will be enjoyed as well,” he said.

DJ Yoga believes this mix tape will unearth new talents and promote the new trend. “ I am optimistic Ghanaians will embrace the new genre just like they have with other genres”, he added.
