Glasgow 2014: Ghana’s Flings through to next stage

Ghana's Flings Owusu-Agyapong yesterday made it to the next round of the Women's 100m race with a time of 11.68.

Despite finishing fourth in the heats, the 25-year-old Ghanaian finished with a better time and has made it through alongside Nigeria's duo of Blessing Okagbare and G. Asumnu, together with Jamaican trio of Schillonie Calvert, Veronica Campbell-Brwon and K. Stewart, among many other runners.

England's Adam Gemili recorded the fastest time in the men's 100m heats to qualify for today's semi-finals.

The 20-year-old won his race by a distance in 10.15 seconds, 0.10sec slower than his personal best.

He is joined in the semis by compatriots Richard Kilty, who had a dead heat for second in his race, and fastest loser Harry Aikines-Aryeetey.

Earlier, Ghana’s Solomon Afful failed to qualify to the second round of his 100m heats after finishing fifth in a time of 10.66 seconds. The race was won by Nick Ashmead of Jamaica in 10.40 seconds. 

In the women's 100m heats, England's Bianca Williams produced a superb run to qualify as the fifth fastest.

Her time of 11.37 secured her a place in the semi-finals along with fellow English sprinters Asha Philip and Sophie Papps. Northern Ireland's Amy Foster also qualified, but 16-year-old Hannah Brier and her fellow Welsh sprinter Rachel Johncock failed to qualify. 

Nigeria's Blessing Okagbare was fastest with 11.20 seconds, and Jamaican duo of Veronica Campbell-Brown and Schillonie Calvert tied at second with a time of 11.29.

In the women's 400m heats, English trio of Kelly Massey, Shana Cox and Margaret Adeoye all qualified for the semi-finals.

And there will be a healthy home nation’s contingent in Monday's women's hammer final after Scottish trio Susan McKelvie , Rachel Hunter and Myra Perkins, England's Sophie Hitchon, Sarah Holt and Shaunagh Brown and Wales' Carys Parry all finished in the top 12 of qualifying.
