Rainstorm destroys Chakoli D/A Primary School, displaces families in Kpandai District

A devastating rainstorm has left pupils of Chakoli D/A Primary School in the Kpandai District of the Northern Region without a place to learn, disrupting academic activities and displacing many families.

The storm, which struck on Thursday, February 20, 2025, caused widespread destruction in communities such as Bankamba, Chakoli, and Nanjero, leaving several homes, schools, and places of worship in ruins.

Among the worst-hit institutions is Chakoli D/A Primary School, where the entire school structure was torn apart, making it impossible for classes to continue. Teachers and pupils are now forced to hold lessons under trees, often in unsafe conditions.

Speaking to Graphic Online, the Headteacher of Chakoli D/A Primary, James Addai, expressed deep concern over the disruption.

"The situation is serious. For days now, we’ve been struggling to hold lessons for the children. With no classrooms, we are forced to teach under trees and close classes before noon due to the harsh conditions," he lamented.

He also noted that school attendance has dropped significantly, as many students prefer to stay home or accompany their parents to the farm. In response, school authorities have been visiting homes to encourage parents to send their children back to school. However, without urgent intervention to rebuild the school, many fear the situation will only worsen, especially with the rainy season approaching.

The storm also displaced hundreds of families, forcing them to seek refuge in neighboring communities. James Asuo, the Assemblyman for the Nanjero Electoral Area, described the damage as overwhelming.

"In Chakoli alone, about 30 houses, including a chapel and a school, have been completely wiped out. Many families are now sleeping in overcrowded spaces with neighbors, which is difficult given the large family sizes," he explained.

He called on the government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and philanthropists to provide immediate relief.

"The level of destruction is enormous, and we need urgent assistance to rebuild lives. We appeal to the government and well-meaning individuals to help us recover from this disaster," he urged.

As affected communities struggle to rebuild, the urgent need for shelter, food, and support for displaced pupils remains a top priority.
