Ga South endorses President’s appointee

The Ga South Municipal Assembly (GSMA) has overwhelmingly endorsed the President’s appointee, Mr Joseph Nyarni Stephen, as the Municipal Chief Executive for the area.

The 38-member assembly who were all present voted hundred per cent in the election which was supervised by the Electoral Commission last Friday at Weija.

The MCE needed the votes of two- thirds of the assembly members present to be approved as chief executive as required by the Constitution.

Special meeting

The special meeting by the assembly to endorse the MCE was graced by a number of dignitaries and traditional authorities who were accompanied by their entourage.

The dignitaries present included Mr Ishmael Ashietey, Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr Mohammed Agyei Sowah, Chief Executive officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly(AMA) as well as Mr Jerry Akwei Thompson, immediate past MCE, and Mr Stephen Owusu Afriyie, the first MCE to be appointed when the Ga South Municipality was created.

Regional minister

Addressing the special meeting of the Assembly, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr Ishmael Ashietey, said he had known and worked with the newly elected MCE and knew his competence and capabilities and trusted that it would reflect in his delivery at the assembly.

He said due to the cordial relationship between the Regional Coordinating Directorate and the Ga South Municipality, it would not be difficult for the MCE to approach the directorate for assistance to develop the municipality.

He urged all assembly members and staff to throw their weight behind the MCE as they have demonstrated by overwhelmingly endorsing him to ensure the rapid development of the municipality.

For his part, the Presiding Member of GSMA, Mr Robert Korkuvi Ahordagbe, commended the assembly members for voting overwhelmingly to endorse the President’s nominee for the post of the MCE.

He said the voting which was conducted in an atmosphere of brotherliness devoid of any confusion and rancour demonstrated the maturity of the assembly members and their commitment to the development of the area.

MCE’s acceptance speech

In his acceptance speech, Mr Stephen thanked the President for nominating him for the municipality and promised to work hard to justify the confidence reposed in him by both the President and the assembly. 

He urged the regional minister and other dignitaries as well as the assembly members not to hesitate to draw his attention to any issue that would help advance the cause of the municipality, the region and the country as a whole.
