UCC medical lecturers’ strike: GTEC to meet university management and lecturers tomorrow
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) is meeting with management of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and striking lecturers from the School of Medical Sciences tomorrow, March 11, 2025, in an effort to resolve the ongoing standoff over faculty promotions.
The lecturers withdrew their teaching services two weeks ago, protesting the university’s decision not to promote associate professors in the medical school to full professors unless they hold a PhD.
They argue that the requirement is out of step with both national and international standards, as medical professors are typically promoted based on their clinical fellowship qualifications rather than PhDs.
GTEC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Jerry Safo, confirmed the emergency meeting and expressed optimism about a resolution in a radio interview with Joy Fm.

“The commission became aware of this issue about a week ago. Usually, universities handle such internal matters, but given how far this has escalated, the Director-General has decided to step in,” he said.
He added that GTEC is engaging all parties to find common ground.
“We have invited the university management and the lecturers, and we are meeting them today. Our hope is that by the end of the meeting, the matter will be resolved,” Mr Safo stated.
