51 NPP aspirants face vetting in Volta Region

A total of 51 parliamentary aspirants  in the 26 constituencies of the Volta Region have been vetted to contest the parliamentary primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) slated for June 13, 2015.

The region was divided into the southern and northern sectors to  ensure that the aspirants had easy access to the vetting centres. 

Among the aspirants were the former Volta regional and deputy regional  ministers, former district chief executives, university dons, legal practitioners and private businessmen.

Mr Samuel Kofi Dzamesi, a former Volta Regional Minister, was among the first batch of 18 aspirants vetted in Ho for the southern sector of the Volta Region. 

A former District Chief Executive (DCE) for the South Dayi District, Mrs Woyram Boachie-Danquah, and some notable persons such as a prominent private legal practitioner, Mr Ernest Gaewu, and a university don, Dr Samuel Buame, also submitted themselves for vetting.

Also in the race are the former DCEs for Akan, Buem and Krachi East, Mr Kofi Adjei Ntim, Mr Charles Agbontoh and Mr Michael Djato respectively, as well as a former Deputy Volta Regional Minister, Mr Joseph Kwaku Nayan, who is eyeing the Nkwanta North constituency seat.  

Southern sector 

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the Assistant Administrator in charge of operations at the Volta regional headquarters of  the NPP, Mr Seth Tsikata, said six candidates had earlier appeared before the vetting committee on Monday, adding that 12 faced the committee on Tuesday.

He explained that while some aspirants would be contesting unopposed, others would  battle it out in the southern sector.

He mentioned Richard Collins Anku for North Tongu; Lovely David Denis for South Dayi; and  Justice Jowana Aklamanu for Adaklu as those going unopposed.

Additionally, he said there were two candidates for Ketu-North, two for Akatsi South, two for Agotime Ziope, two for Central Tongu, two for South Dayi, two for Adaklu and two for the Ho-West constituencies.

Mr Tsikata disclosed that nominations for Ho Central and South Tongu constituencies were on hold pending court ruling on issues relating to the grievances.

Northern sector

Giving the breakdown for the northern sector, the Regional Secretary, Mr Joseph Homenya, disclosed that there were five candidates for Krachi East alone, three each for Krachi Nchumuru, Krachi West, Nkwanta North, Akan, four for Buem, five for Hohoe, two for Afadjato South, and five for Biakoye.

He also said the process for the Nkwanta South was on hold pending the outcome of  some issues under negotiation.
