Zenu, Akatamanso, environs get potable water supply
President John Dramani Mahama says the government is stepping up the development of safe water projects in parts of the country to yield economic dividends and improve the health of the people.
He said projects, including those under construction and at the planning stage, would be quickened in a bid to provide a sustainable driving force for growth.
President Mahama said this when he inaugurated the Zenu, Akatamanso, and Kubeso Numbers One and Two pipe-borne water project last Friday at Zenu near Ashaiman.
US$3 million project
The US$3 million project, which is under the Accra-Tema Metropolitan Area (ATMA) Rural Water Supply Project, connects the densely populated communities and their environs to potable water from the Kpong Water project via a 25.1 kilometre pipeline.
The Kpong Water Rehabilitation project, which was inaugurated by President Mahama late last year, has already improved water supply to Adenta and some under-served areas in the national capital.
Currently, rural coverage has caught up with urban coverage at 76 per cent, and the government plans to achieve 100 per cent water coverage in the country by 2025.
Pay bills
President Mahama said bridging the urban-rural divide in drinking water was very important as it would improve the lives of the rural people and keep them from moving to the cities.
Development, he said, would not be concentrated in Accra or the other urban centres alone, but distributed among the various communities.
The President asked the beneficiaries to readily pay their bills to keep the Ghana Water Company Limited in operation.
President Mahama assured the people that the roads in the area would be rehabilitated.
He mentioned the Klagon-Ashaiman road, which is currently undergoing rehabilitation, and said it would not end there but spread to other adjoining areas.
