The Tema Regional Police Command on Tuesday arrested two suspected armed robbers who attempted robbing an unsuspecting bank customer.

The two, Richard Osei, 28 and Eric Asante, 23; year old driver armed with two locally manufacture red short guns and six live cartridges posed as a passenger and taxi driver respectively, attempted robbing the victim, Mr Samuel Christian Attipoe, when he joined the vehicle after transacting business at the Tema Heavy Industrial area branch of the Universal Merchant Bank.

The Tema Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Juliana Obeng told the Daily Graphic that the two suspects driving a Toyota corolla salon vehicle with registration number GT 6536-12 at about 8:30 were spotted by members of the industrial area Taxi drivers association loitering within the vicinity

The group, she said, reported the suspicious movement to a police officer on duty at an adjourning company.

According to her, the unsuspecting victim, who had withdrawn an unspecified amount of money from the bank, stood by the roadside looking for a vehicle when the driver, Asante signalled him that he was heading towards Tema Community One.

Mr Attipoe, unmindful of the motive of the two joined the vehicle.

ASP Obeng point out that, the driver sped off and headed towards the GTP roundabout where he parked and engaged the victim in fisticuffs in their bid to rob him of the money.

"Unknown to them, the police officer on duty in the adjourning company followed them in a different vehicle", ASP Obeng indicated.

The officer, she said shot at the tyre of the vehicle in an attempt to demobilised the two from escaping. Asante, she said however sped off with his accomplice and the victim.

She explained the policeman sought assistance from a visibility team nearby to chase them. In the melee, the police team fired at them injuring the three in the process.

They were however arrested at Community Four after a hot chase. 

A search on them revealed two locally manufacture red short guns, a substance suspected to be marijuana, an unspecified amount of money, a savings withdrawal booklet belonging to an unidentified woman.

The suspects and the victim are presently on admission at the Tema General Hospital while the police intensify investigations into the incident
