E.P. women organise health screening, seminar

The Evangelical Presbyterian (E.P.) Church, Meridian Presbytery Women’s Fellowship, has organised a health screening exercise and seminar for the public at Community One, Tema.

The event, which brought together more than 100 participants, including members of the fellowship within the presbytery, the clergy and  the public also witnessed the launch of the Women’s Day celebration.

A team of medical personnel from selected public and private health institutions screened the participants for various ailments and health disorders, including hypertension, diabetes and hearing impairment.  

Speaking at the event, the Senior Nursing Officer at the Cervical Cancer Unit of the Volta Regional Hospital, Ho, Mrs Ruby Kwadzokpo, cautioned females against the use of gel ointments and inserting herbal preparations into their genitals.

Perception of sexual vitality

She said the practice, which many females mistakenly perceived as enhancing sexual vitality, was rather a major cause of cervical cancer.

Mrs Kwadzokpo also warned women against promiscuity, particularly in female children below 15 years, and said the practice was a source of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), the sexually transmitted infection that leads to the deadly cervical cancer disease.

She urged women with symptoms such as abnormal menstrual periods, syphilis and indication of genital wax after sex to seek early medical diagnosis and treatment.

Rev. Dr Bridgette Ben-Naimah of the Guidance and Counselling Department of the University of Ghana, and the Chaplain of E.P. Church, Legon branch, urged mothers especially to serve as worthy mentors to their children in order to curb the high incidence of moral decay and child delinquency in the society.

Glowing tribute

She paid glowing tributes to Mrs Vida Dzobo and the late Mrs Vanlare for instituting the E.P. Church Women’s Fellowship and urged the current leadership to be committed to promoting unity in the church.

The Vice Synod Moderator of the E.P. Church, Meridian Presbytery, Rev. Emma Sepah, who performed the launch of the Women’s Day celebration, urged women to not shirk their parental responsibility of upholding virtues in their homes and society.

The President of the  Meridian Presbytery, Mrs Gloria Kokloe, appealed to the various districts and congregational groups to mobilise the resources needed to support the spiritual and physical development of the fellowship.
