Death toll now 8 in fatal Cape Coast crash (Updated)
The death toll in the fatal road crash early Thursday morning at Kobina Ansah on the Cape Coast –Assin Fosu road is now eight, reports Daily Graphic correspondent Shirley Asiedu-Addo.
Six of them, including four females and two males were said to have died at the spot while two others, a male and a female died later at the Central Regional Hospital in Cape Coast.
Sixteen others who were injured are receiving treatment at the same hospital.
The accident occurred at around 1am on Thursday.
The bodies of the dead, yet to be identified, have been deposited at the Regional Hospital in Cape Coast.
The accident occurred when a Benz bus with registration number GR 1047 H travelling from Moree near Cape Coast with mainly smoked fish sellers and other traders collided with an articulator truck travelling towards Yamonransa.
The Benz bus could hardly be identified as the impact of the collision virtually shredded and scattered it along the road, with blood-soaked shattered windscreens flung about.
According to some residents of the community, they heard a loud bang and rushed to the scene to help the victims before personnel from the Fire Service and the police arrived.
The Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission, Mr Stephen Anokye said the accident could have resulted from fatigue and over speeding.
He said the Benz bus was also very old and rickety.
Mr Anokye urged traders to ensure that they travelled a day earlier to the market centres to avoid encouraging drivers to overspeed. He also cautioned drivers against over speeding, over loading and fatigue driving.
