Patrice Motsepe re-elected unopposed as CAF President

South African Patrice Motsepe has been re-elected unopposed as president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for a second term.

The 63-year-old, who has held the position since 2021, confirmed his decision to seek re-election in October 2024.

His reappointment for another four-year term was officially confirmed at the CAF Extraordinary General Assembly in Cairo on Wednesday, with FIFA President Gianni Infantino in attendance.

Motsepe, a mining magnate and owner of South African club Mamelodi Sundowns, expressed his intention to build on the "good progress" made during his first term.

While Motsepe's re-election was uncontested, elections for positions on CAF's Executive Committee were held, with Cameroonian football legend Samuel Eto'o securing a seat. Additionally, representatives for Africa on the FIFA Council were elected during the assembly.

Motsepe's second term was all but secured before the Cairo gathering, as he was the sole candidate for the presidency.

The lack of opposition is seen as a strong endorsement of his leadership, especially given the challenges he faced when he took office in 2021 following the controversial ban of former president Ahmad of Madagascar.

Since Motsepe took office, the African football governing body has experienced significant financial growth, posting a $72 million (£55.5 million) profit from last year's Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) – a figure 18 times higher than the profit generated by the 2022 edition.

When announcing his intention to run for a second term, Motsepe told the BBC that while progress had been made, "there is still a lot of work to be done."

In his speech on Wednesday, he emphasized the state of national stadiums across Africa as a key focus for his second term.

"In 2021, 36 countries were unable to host football in their own stadiums. That number has now reduced to 12, but this remains a significant issue," he remarked.

"At CAF and FIFA, it is our responsibility to continue supporting the development of sports infrastructure," Motsepe added.
