“Your four years are ticking, work with urgency” – Mahama to deputy ministers

President John Dramani Mahama has urged newly sworn-in deputy ministers to approach their work with urgency, reminding them that their time in office is limited to a four-year mandate.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony at Jubilee House on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, the President stressed that, unlike career public servants who have job security until retirement, political appointees must work within a strict timeframe to deliver results for Ghanaians.

“There are two clocks we hear as those elected by the people of Ghana to lead them,” President Mahama said.

“The first is the ticking of the four-year mandate given to us. The officers you will be working with in the public service have job security until retirement at 60 years. Their clock ticks at a slower pace, so they may not feel the same urgency as you. Your task is to motivate and encourage them to work at the speed required to meet the expectations of the people.”

His remarks came as he swore in 13 deputy ministers and one minister of state, reinforcing his administration’s strategy to streamline government while ensuring that key ministries receive the necessary support.

President Mahama urged the new appointees to be proactive, work closely with their sector ministers, and avoid complacency. “If you can instill this sense of urgency in those you work with, we shall achieve success,” he said.
