AMA to reintroduce embossment of security numbers on taxis

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) is to reintroduce the embossment of the AMA security numbers on taxis that operate in the metropolis, beginning March 1, 2016.

It has accordingly directed taxi owners and drivers to register their vehicles with the AMA for the embossment of their cabs with the special security numbers before the due date of enforcement.

The embossment of taxicabs is the assigning of special security numbers to the cabs within the metropolis to ensure easy identification.

The initiative is meant to prevent or reduce the incidence of taxis being used for robbery and other criminal activities.

The Public Relations Officer of the AMA, Numo Blafo III, told the Daily Graphic in an interview that the reintroduction of the AMA security number embossment was to ensure security within the assembly’s jurisdiction.

He explained that the exercise was suspended and reviewed to make it more effective and efficient.

Moreover, he said, taxi drivers were calling for the reinforcement of the exercise because other assemblies that had emulated the practice harassed them when taxis without the embossed numbers drove in their jurisdictions.

He said taxi owners and drivers whose vehicles were embossed with security numbers in the previous exercise are to visit the AMA offices for re-registration while those who did not have them have to register.
