NGO assists Tema Manhean School
Merona Foundation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has donated assorted items to the Tema Manhean Community School.
The items, made up of over 500 school bags, stationery, clothes, toys and shoes would help improve the quality of education in the school.
In addition, the NGO donated several books to the school’s library.
Presenting the items, the Executive Director of the foundation, Madam Cynthia Oteng, said the Tema Manhean Community School was chosen for the donation because of the challenges faced by children in the school.
Madam Oteng said children such as those in the Tema Manhean community lacked basic educational materials to help them in their studies.
Madam Oteng said even though education was a right for all, especially children, quality education must not elude children from deprived communities.
“When we talk about quality education, it does not mean having a large number of students enrol in school. What it means is that, teaching materials, welfare of teachers must be provided to improve learning ”, she said.
Piers Simon Appeal
Madam Oteng said Merona Foundation decided to support the Tema Manhean Community School because of an appeal made to the foundation.
She said for that reason, the foundation organised a walk in the United Kingdom to appeal for support for the school and the Piers Simon (School in Bag) project in the UK donated over 500 school bags, four boxes of hand-knitted teddy bears to the school.
Headteacher appeal
The Headteacher of the school, Mrs Frances Aboagye, said the school, which was established in 2001 with a current a population of 628, was facing many challenges.
She mentioned lack of books and basic educational materials as some of the things the school desperately needed to provide quality education for the children.
She expressed appreciation to the foundation for the gesture and appealed to other benevolent organisations to emulate it.
