Assembly inaugurates school block for Mozano Basic School
The Gomoa West District Assembly has inaugurated and officially handed over a six-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities, constructed by the assembly, to the Mozano D/A Basic School.
The project was funded by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund)
Addressing the gathering, the Gomoa West District Chief Executive, Mr Theophilus Aidoo-Mensah, said the district had benefited from numerous education projects aimed at improving the standards of education in the area, pointing out that education was one of the major priorities of the government geared towards the training of the needed human resource to contribute to the growth of the nation.
Shared responsibility
He indicated that the provision of quality education to the citizenry was a shared responsibility, and called on parents and teachers to play their active roles to complement the government’s efforts to realise that objective.
He admonished parents not to allow their children to watch television for long hours at the expense of their studies, since that would negatively affect their academic performance.
“It would be academically suicidal for schoolchildren to watch unnecessary television programmes for hours while their books lay idle,’’ he added.
He stressed that the government was doing everything possible to increase access to education, especially at the basic level in the district and urged parents to ensure that their children studied hard and excelled in their academic performance.
He also entreated the school authorities to maintain the facility to prolong its lifespan.
Commendation
The Circuit Supervisor for the Eshiem Circuit of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr Kwame Yeboah, commended the government for the project, saying it would put an end to the practice where teachers often left the school due to its deplorable state.
He also said the new school block would help attract more pupils and teachers to the school and reduce congestion in the nearby schools.
The headmaster of the school, Mr Francis Yaovi Teyi, who described the construction of the school block as a timely intervention to enhance quality education, said the school’s current population stood at 364.
He, however, appealed to the government to construct a teachers’ quarters to accommodate teachers in the school, as well as the extension of the school feeding programme to the school in order to encourage pupils to stay in school.
Meanwhile, the district assembly has disbursed scholarships to the tune of GH¢37,500 to 52 students from the district who are schooling in various senior high and tertiary institutions in the country.
