
Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research; At the war front of the fight against COVID-19
The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) at the University of Ghana, Legon, is the leading diagnostic centre, fighting the battle against COVID-19 in the country.
Established in 1979, the NMIMR is the outcome of efforts by a former Dean of the University of Ghana Medical School, Prof. Charles Easmon Odamtten, Prof. Kenji Honda of the Fukushima Medical School in Japan and the Japan International Cooperation Agency(JICA).
It was built by the Government of Japan and donated to the government and people of Ghana in honour of Dr Hideyo Noguchi, a
Japanese researcher who spent his final days in Ghana researching into Yellow Fever, a disease that killed him in 1928.

Like any other institution, the NMIMR has a mandate of conducting research into infectious and non-infectious diseases such as malaria, diabetes, cancer etc, build capacity through training; that is providing training opportunities in Biomedical research for young scientists
