Fashion Forum holds debut talk event
Fashion Forum Ghana (FFG), a platform that seeks to help establish best practices on the fashion front in this country, has held the first of its quarterly fashion talk series as part of the Ghana Culture Day celebration that came off recently at the National Theatre.
Ghana Culture Day was organised by the Ghana Culture Forum a membership-based civil society, in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture & Creative Arts.
The talk on fashion brought together a stellar panel of industry and legal experts to educate and inform an audience of mostly fashion industry professionals and novices, on the topic: The Legal Usage of the name ‘Ghana’ in Fashion Identities and Branding.
The panelists were Mrs. Sarah Norkor Anku, a State Attorney at the Registrar General’s Office; Mr. Tetteh Adzedu, Chairman of the Ghana Association of Fashion Designers and Mrs. Yvonne Ntiamoah, Head of the Fashion Design Department at Radford University College. Ms. Hillary Sarah Andoh was moderator for the discussion.

Many in the audience seemed surprised and happy at the same time to know from Mrs Anku that the use of the name “Ghana” or its “GH” abbreviation was the intellectual property of the government of Ghana and anyone using them in their brand identities without written consent of the government was doing so illegally.
She explained that outfits like the Ghana Association of Fashion Designers (GAFD) had gone through the proper registration process and has been granted the right to use the name “Ghana” in their identity and branding.
She advised those in the fashion industry to educate themselves on the importance of being registered with the Registrar’s Office in order to have legal recourse and protection of their intellectual property.
The talk session was an extremely beneficial moment for fashion professionals to attain education, share ideas and discuss important matters relating to the strengthening of the fashion industry here.
Guests at the fashion talk programme were treated by singer/rapper AJ Nelson to an acappella version of his new single, Power To The People which features Wiyaala.
Officials behind the Fashion Forum Ghana said they were happy the talk went well and has become an outlet to help build the Ghana fashion industry through informative education and social networking.
The second talk series from the Fashion Forum Ghana (FFG) is slated for June on the topic: Globalising Ghanaian Fashion.
