Acquah wins Silver in long jump

Ghanaian long jumper Deborah Acquah put up a spirited performance to win silver at the ongoing African Games in Rabat, Morocco, yesterday.

The young athlete leapt a distance of 6.37 metres to place second behind gold medalist Ese Brume of Nigeria who won the event with a jump of 6.69 metres.

South African Beneke Lynique secured bronze with a leap of 6.30 metres.

Acquah’s feat improved Ghana’s medal haul to 12: two gold, two silver and eight bronze.

Track and field events — women’s high jump (Rose Yeboah) and the men’s 4x100 metres — have accounted for the two gold medals won so far, with Grace Obuor winning bronze in the women’s 400 metres final last Wednesday.

Yesterday, Obuor failed to progress to the final of the women’s 200 metres as she finished fourth in her semi-final heats in a time of 24.03 seconds. The race was won by Congolese sprinter, Natacha Ngoye Akamabi, in a time of 23.05 seconds.

It was not an eventful day for Ghana in the longer sprint event as Edwin Kwabla Gadayi and Martin Owusu-Antwi failed to progress in the men’s 200 metres, while Joseph Paul Amoah — who anchored Ghana’s gold medal-winning 4x100m quartet — withdrew from the event.

Owusu-Antwi clocked 20.97 sec to place third in Heats 2, while Gadayi crossed the finish line in 20.92 to finish in fourth position in Heats 3.
