Manchester City Football Club has officially released Benjamin Mendy, 28, as he awaits his retrial on two alleged rape charges.

Mendy had been suspended by the club since his initial charges were brought forward in August 2021, and his contract is set to expire at the end of this month.

Earlier this year, Mendy was cleared of six counts of rape and one charge of sexual assault following a five-month trial at Chester Crown Court. However, he is now facing a retrial scheduled to begin on June 26, where he will face one count of alleged rape and another of attempted rape. Mendy maintains his innocence and denies all charges brought against him.

Jenny Wiltshire of Hickman & Rose, representing Benjamin Mendy, expressed gratitude to the jury for their dedication and commitment after he was acquitted of most of the charges earlier this year. Wiltshire also thanked all those who supported Mendy throughout the process, including the witnesses who testified on his behalf amid intense media attention.

She stated that Mendy looks forward to clearing his name in relation to the remaining two charges so that he can begin rebuilding his life. Wiltshire added that no further comments can be made by her or Mendy until the proceedings have concluded.

Mendy's co-accused, Louis Saha Matturie from Eccles, Salford, was found not guilty of three counts of rape involving two teenagers. However, the jury was unable to reach verdicts on three additional rape counts and three allegations of sexual assault made by five other women. Matturie will face a retrial later this year, with a tentative date set for September.

Manchester City's decision to release Mendy reflects the ongoing legal process and the need for resolution before any further action can be taken. The retrial will determine the outcome of the remaining charges against Mendy, who had been an active player for the club until his suspension and subsequent release.
