We have not truly honoured Nkrumah — Kofi Adams
The National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Kofi Adams, has said the country has not truly honoured the first President of the country, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
Mr Adams said Dr Nkrumah must be celebrated for his immense role in shaping Ghana and the African continent.
Contributing to the ongoing debate on Founders Day, Mr Adams said Nkrumah, through the Convention People’s Party (CPP), mobilised the ordinary masses made up of workers, traders, farmers, market women and the Veranda Boys to fight against colonial rule towards the achievement of freedom and independence for Ghanaians.
African Union
The NDC’s national organiser said the African Union (AU), in recognition of the leading role of Dr Nkrumah during the formation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), had also set aside September 21 to celebrate Nkrumah. “Let people know that when you do something good, you will be honoured,” Mr Adams said.
According to him, Nkrumah is about the nation Ghana and his celebration is about how to motivate others to be patriotic citizens and so nothing should be done to obliterate his memory from the history of the country.
He added that any attempt to throw dust into the eyes of Ghanaians about the achievements of such a national hero would not succeed.
Solidarity march
Meanwhile, the NDC will be embarking on a solidarity march today, September 21, to commemorate the birthday of Dr Nkrumah, the Founder and first President of the Republic of Ghana.
A statement issued by the party in Accra said the march, which would commence at 6a.m, would move from Nima, through the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, through Farisco to UTC and end up at the Community Centre next to the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum where solidarity messages would be delivered by some of the party’s top members and the Socialist Forum.
The statement called on party loyalists to endeavour to show up massively to join in the march in solidarity with all Ghanaians, as well as all socialist and progressive forces.
It is a fact that "Nkrumah Never dies", the statement concluded.
