Manya Krobo Konor welcomes polls in municipality

The Konor of Manya Krobo, Nene Sakite II, has welcomed the move by the Electoral Commission (EC) to organise district level elections in the Lower Manya Municipality on December 3, this year.

The municipality had for the past three years not been with an assembly member due to a dispute with the Shai Osudoku District in the Greater Accra Region over some electoral areas in Akuse.

Although the case was determined by the Supreme Court in favour of Lower Manya Krobo, the delay in organising the elections prompted the Manya Krobo paramountcy to declare “self government” in the traditional area early this month.

Addressing a grand durbar of chiefs and people of the area at Odumase-Krobo at the weekend to mark this year’s Ngmayem Festival, Nene Sakite, who was highly elated, said such a development which had eluded the people for the past three years would hasten the development of the municipality.

The event, on the theme: “Our Culture, Our Heritage, Our Pride,” was attended by a number of dignitaries such as Mr Jeff Tetteh Kavianu, MP for Upper Manya Krobo, Messrs Joseph Tetteh Angmor and Isaac Tetteh Agbo, political heads  for Upper Manya Krobo and Lower Manya Krobo respectively, as well as Madam Mavis Ama Frempong, the Deputy Eastern Regional Minister.

According to Nene Sakite, the elections which had been slated for December 3 this year must at all cost come on to enable the people in the communities elect their representatives to champion their cause at the assembly.

Common Fund

Nene Sakite, however, noted that now that it had been decided that the elections could be organised, no more excuses such as lack of funds should be made, adding that the Common Fund should be used for that purpose and the assembly reimbursed later.

“Although I only read about the date of the elections in the newspapers and have not yet received any document or letter to that effect, I am highly elated because the elections will help accelerate the development of the area.

“Also, no more excuses such as lack of funds should be made because the Common Fund can be used for that purpose for the assembly to be reimbursed at a later date,” Nene Sakite stated.

Roads

With regards to other social amenities in the area, Nene Sakite deplored the bad nature of roads, most of which had been almost destroyed by heavy duty trucks that transported limestone from the area, and appealed to the government to rehabilitate them.

On education, Nene Sakite announced that a new senior high school would be built at Oborpa, a village in the central belt of the municipality, as well as a university, and added that such educational institutions would churn out the needed professionals to develop Kroboland and Ghana in general.

Nene Sakite, whose educational fund had catered for 750 pupils and students in senior high schools and tertiary institutions, one of whom recently obtained 1st Class Honours, appealed to parents to give priority to the education of their children which to him was the best legacy to bequeath them.

Ama Frempong

Madam Mavis Frempong expressed appreciation to the chiefs for helping to maintain peace in the area, especially after the Supreme Court verdict on the 2012 election petition.

She enumerated a number of projects to be undertaken in the area which included rehabilitation of bad roads, construction of a special senior high school and a university which she indicated would be in recognition of the people’s support to the government over the years.
