‘Update yourselves of professional trends’

The Chief Executive Officer of the L’AINE Services Limited (LSL), Dr Ellen Hagan has urged human resource practitioners to be abreast of the changing trends of the profession.

She said human resource was a dynamic profession and practitioners should “speed up on the latest trends of the profession.”

Speaking at the HR Focus Magazine Annual Ghana HR Conference in Accra yesterday, Dr Hagan said the zeal to improve the poor services of HR in the country triggered the initiative of publishing the only human resource magazine (HR Focus) in Ghana.

The conference, which was on the theme, ‘’The Role of HR in maximising Organisational Effectiveness,’’ brought together HR practitioners and students to brainstorm on HR issues and measures to help improve the image of the profession in the country.

Human Resource practitioners from the Assoiciation of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA), Ghana, Cal Bank, Airtel Ghana Ltd, Unilever Ghana Ltd, among others, took turns to deliver papers on the role of human resource and career opportunities.

Dr Hagan said LSL was committed to improving the HR profession, adding that ‘’as part of our corporate social responsibility, we provide HR solutions, organisational developments, payroll solutions and job employment in the HR world.’’

“We, as custodians of human resource, need to provide the basic imperatives to facilitate this initiative,’’ she added.

Presentations

In her presentation on culture, the Human Resource Director of Airtel Ghana Limited, Ms Tina Muparadzi, said HR professionals had a lot of responsibilities and roles to play in the smooth running of an organisation, and there was the need for them to exhibit the highest level of professionalism.

She advised HR professionals to provide their employees with quality training, explaining, “customer experience is very important to the business.’’ 

The Country Manager of the ACCA Ghana, Mr Fiifi Norman Williams, who spoke on “Choosing a career: Things to consider,” stressed the need for candidates to seek professional help from those already in the profession in which they were, before deciding whether or not to change jobs.

The Head of Human Resource, Cal Bank, Mr Samuel Boafo, speaking on “Managing career change after school,” informed the students that there was a vast difference between the school environment and the world of work and advised them to form professional networks to facilitate securing jobs.

Competitiveness in job market

Speaking on the topic, “Rebranding your uniqueness for the corporate world”, the Manager, Organisational Development of LSL, Ms Joycelyn Mends-Ainoo, said that the world of work had become very competitive;  “consequently, we need to develop ourselves and change our way of doing things in order to be competitive.”

As part of the conference, a career fair was held at the auditorium of the  Business School, University of Ghana, to educate students and job seekers on what it took to secure a dream job.
