UCC honours 10 students for excellence

The Institute of Education of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has held a ceremony to honour the 10 best graduating students in the Diploma in Basic Education of the Colleges of Education programmes.

The award, the fourth since its inception, is to encourage students to strive for excellence.

Award winners

Mr Robert Annan Junior of the Akrokeri College of Education in the Ashanti Region was adjudged the best graduating student with a grade point average of 3.82. He received a citation, laptop, printer, modem and GHC1,500.

The nine others awarded in the zonal categories each received a citation, laptop and GHC750.

They were Messers Abdulai Shahanunu, Tamale College of Education, Barnabas Amoah, St John Bosco College of Education, Rachael Asamoah, St Theresa’s College, Agnes Waklatsi, Mount Mary’s College of Education and Theophilus Yeboah and Prince Richmond Mensha, both of Fosu College of Education. 

Others were Messers Michael Milenyapkor, Akatsi College of Education, Richard Tetteh, SDA College of Education and Emmanuel Agyare, Akrokeri College of Education.

Award Committee

In an address, the Chairman of the Awards Committee, Mr Nicholas Kutor, said apart from the academic excellence, the award winners possessed leadership qualities, were time conscious and friendly, saying that they really deserved the awards.

He said the awards, since its inception had increased excellence among the students with 55 students obtaining first class.

Before the inception of the awards in 2010, Mr Kutor said no student had a first class, saying the awards had greatly improved the standards among students.

Good values for life

The Vice Chancellor of UCC, Prof D.D Kuupole, urged the students to develop good values for life apart from being excellent academically, adding that academic excellence was not the only ingredient needed for success.

He also advised them to seek further studies and continue learning and transform challenges into opportunities.

The Director of the Institute of Education, Professor Fred Ocansey, advised the award winners to stay ahead and be mentors in the areas where they found themselves to the younger generation.

“Develop strong cultures of excellence and be mentors to the younger generation wherever you find yourself. Make excellence a priority,” he said.

A Director with the Ghana Education Service, Mr Jacob Willie Moknaar, in an address, urged the trained teachers to support efforts to ensure improved quality of education, especially at the basic level.
