Phone thief nabbed
For allegedly stealing mobile phones valued at GHc2,570 the Madina Magistrate court, presided over by Mrs Priscilla Mireku-Dapaah, has remanded Umer Saeed in police custody.
Saeed pleaded not guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit crime and stealing. His accomplice, an alleged soldier, is now at large.
According to the prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police Mary Ahafianyo, the first complainant, Mr Kwabena Antwi Boasiako, is a retired Madina Divisional Commander who lives at Ashaley Botwe, near Madina. The second complainant is Mr Issac Mensah, a pastor and resident of Kumasi.
The third complainant, Mr Edward Antwi, is an electrician who lives at Ashaley Botwe, while the fourth complainant is a pastor at Agbobloshie.
ASP Ahafianyo said Saeed is a scrap dealer who resides at Agbobloshie and the second accused person is an alleged soldier.
She said that on August 2, 2014 Saeed and his accomplice who is now at large decided to go on a mobile phone stealing operation at Ashaley Botwe with the support of a long metal with a sticky glue at the end. Saeed and his accomplice picked seven phones from the window of the complainants.
The prosecutor said that at about 2:30 a.m., Mensah and Boamah who are pastors and a resident of Kumasi had come to visit their friend Bosiako, and had joined him in one of his rooms for prayers.
ASP Ahafianyo said further that the first accused skilfully used a long metal with glue at the edges to pick seven assorted phones through the window while they were praying fervently.
Saeed as well continued to the next house and then used the same method to pick three other phones from that house.
The prosecutor said, however prosecution witness Abdul Latif Muntari who had woken up to urinate spotted Saeed and his accomplice , raised an alarm and the accused persons took to their heels. The second accused managed to escape with the phones he had stolen but luck eluded him when the first accused was arrested.
She said a police patrol team rushed to the scene and rescued Saeed from being lynched and sent him to the Adentan Police station.
A search conducted on him revealed seven stolen mobile phones valued at GH2, 570 which belonged to the complainants.
Saeed was arrested but failed to lead the police to the house of his accomplice who is now at large.
