Man jailed 4 years for stealing child

The Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a 25-year-old man to four years in jail for stealing a four-year-old child.

The convict, Nana Benyin Quarshie, pleaded not guilty to the offence of child stealing but the court, presided over by Ms Sedinam Agbemava, found him guilty after a full trial and was convicted accordingly.

He is said to have stolen the victim from her neighbourhood at Lartebiokorshie, a suburb of Accra, when the mother of the child had gone to work.

The Prosecutor, Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr A. Annor, told the court that the complainant was the mother of the victim who lived at Lartebiokorshie.

He said at about 4 p.m. on October 31, 2012, the mother was in the market when she received a phone call from home that the victim could not be found in the vicinity.

She quickly rushed home to join a search for the child, which had been organised by the neighbours.

Mr Annor said the search was extended to the evening and the convict was seen with the victim around the neighbourhood.

The mother lodged a complaint at the Mamprobi Police where the convict was arrested.
