PCG ministers’ spouses launch breast cancer project

The Ministers’ Spouses Conference of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana has launched its 40th anniversary celebration with focus on breast cancer awareness and treatment for its members and the general public.

Under the project, the Ministers’ Spouses Conference has targeted an amount of GH¢50,000 to be raised between now and July when it will organise a massive breast-screening exercise in the Western Presbytery of the PCG during its Annual General Meeting (AGM).

The 40th anniversary and breast cancer project launch was held at the Trinity Congregation of the PCG in Koforidua with a church service on the theme: ‘Be filled with the holy spirit - fighting breast cancer together’.

Formation

The PCG Ministers’ Spouses Conference was formed 40 years ago to bring all spouses of the ministers together to support their spouses’ roles as ministers and also to support the welfare of women and children.

Each year, the group focuses on a particular issue for its AGM and raises funds towards the achievement of that goal. This year, the focus is on breast cancer awareness and the establishment of a fund to support people diagnosed with the disease.

Mrs Rosekel Omenyo, the National President of the Ministers’ Spouses Conference, who threw more light on the project, said they decided to highlight the disease, which had been described by medical experts as a silent killer among women.

She said the group had been enlightened on the causes and prevention of breast cancer and was, therefore, focusing its sensitisation campaign on clinical diagnosis and treatment to ensure that people reported early for treatment.

Early treatment

Mrs Omenyo stressed that breast cancer was real but once diagnosed early there was treatment. She urged the public to stop attaching superstition to the disease and rather seek early treatment, adding that ‘God was the ultimate healer, but works through doctors.’

She called on all women to go for screening once every year and urged parents to send their adolescent daughters for regular screening.

The National President indicated that the group would hold a breast-screening exercise in Cape Coast as part of its anniversary.  The funds raised for the project, she said, would be used to support those who would be diagnosed with the disease.

An amount of GH¢11,000.00, including contributions from congregations within the Akuapem Presbytery and other donations from the groups within the church, was realised at the fundraising.
