NIIT offers free ICT training for teachers

The NIIT Ghana, Tema Centres in partnership with the Tema Metropolitan Directorate of Education, has organised a free information and communications technology (ICT) training for the teachers within the metropolis.

The workshop, which was attended by 60 teachers from selected schools, was held at the Tema Methodist Day Senior High School (SHS).

According to the Centre Manager for the NIIT Tema, Mr Gaurav Sharda, ICT could be used to bridge the gap between the less endowed schools and those with modern facilities.

“It is in this light that the NIIT Tema Centre decided to use its resources to help train teachers under the Ghana Education Service (GES).

“It is expected that these teachers will also transfer the knowledge acquired to students in their respective schools,” he explained.

Mr Sharda said the teachers were trained in areas such as audio-visual aids for teaching, presentation skills and how to organise data using the microsoft office suite.

Annual programme

Explaining the annual project of the company, he said each year the company offered discounted ICT programmes for all SHSs and junior high schools (JHSs) graduates to help them transit smoothly to the next academic level.

Mr Sharda said this year, the company was offering 20 per cent discount on selected programmes for school leavers across all the four NIIT Education centres in the country.

“By offering high quality training using NIIT’s cutting-edge technologies, ICT education is made affordable for parents and the larger society,” he further explained.

He said management of the NIIT was committed to supporting individuals, schools and corporate institutions by providing practical ICT training endorsed by industry players.

Mr Sharda said the company ran short and long-term ICT programmes and so far tens of thousands of people had benefited from its training activities since the year 2000 when it started operation in the country.

More assistance

The Director of the Tema Metro Education, Mrs Margaret Frempong-Kore, expressed the directorate’s appreciation to NIIT for its invaluable contributions towards ICT education in the country.

She requested more assistance in the provision of equipment, refresher programmes and training of teachers on new technologies.

Mrs Frempong-Kore said such activities would go a long way to facilitate the teaching of ICT and, therefore, called on other stakeholders to support the GES.

The teachers were pleased with the training and called for more of such programmes to help them to improve on their delivery.

All the 60 teachers who attended the workshop were issued with a certificate of participation.
