Man murders granny over Black Stars’ World Cup appearance fees

Residents of Ndusuazo near Half Assini in the Jomoro District of the Western Region were greeted with a horrifying spectacle Wednesday afternoon when a man strangled his 70-year-old grandmother leading to her death after accusing her of witchcraft.

He claims the old lady’s witchcraft prevented denied the family a representation in Ghana’s World Cup squad at the ongoing Brazil 2014 tournament.

The suspect, Patrick Nuamah 38 a cargo truck driver who has since gone under and is being sought for by the police, claimed owing to his grandmother’s witchcraft, his cousin, who is very good at football was unable to make it to the World Cup.

The police said the suspect accused the grandmother of bewitching his cousin, one Annor Nwonzu, leading to his loss of all his footballing skills and therefore, she (the grandmother) did not deserve to live.

The police added that the suspect accused the grandmother, Enam Manya for being the main cause of all the problems and that if his cousin were to have maintained his dribbling skills he would have been among those selected for the World Cup, and consequently improve the economic wellbeing of the family since players who participated in the ongoing FIFA World Cup received $100,000 as appearance fee.

According to the District Police Commander, Superintendent John F. Dzineku, when the police got to the scene, the suspect Nuamah, had bolted and is currently on the run.

He said an eye witness told the police that late Wednesday morning, the late grandmother looking so stressed and helpless came to her in tears claiming that the grandson entered her room and picked a broom and whipped her with it.

Realizing the distress and sad posture of the old lady, she comforted her and asked her to either go back and take her rest or wait in her house while she (the eyewitness) reported the incident to the family head.

According to the District Commander, some senior members of the family quickly set off in an attempt to console the old lady and to assure her of their support.

“But before they could get to the house, Nuamah had already strangled the grandmother to death and left the scene,” he said.

He said the police were doing everything possible to get hold of Nuamah to help in their investigations, adding that the body of the deceased had since been moved to the morgue.
