Mama Luu Foundation honours top 100 pupils in Akrofrom on Christmas Eve

For the past 19 years, Madam Lucy Dompreh, affectionately called "Mama Luu," a Ghanaian-based Registered Nurse in Lanham, Maryland, has supported Ghanaian society through her Mama Luu Foundation (MLF). Her focus has been on assisting brilliant but needy pupils who require financial support or motivation to pursue their education and achieve greater heights.

Every Christmas Eve, the MLF, extends a helping hand to individuals while mentoring them to believe in their potential and take steps to fulfil their dreams of becoming responsible adults in society.

The gesture, according to Madam Dompreh, began after she retired in the United States nearly two decades ago and decided to return to her roots to support her people, particularly young girls.

A native of Amankyim in the Adansi-Akrofrom District near Obuasi in the Ashanti Region, Madam Dompreh is also an associate member of the Ghana-West Africa Program to Combat AIDS and STI (WAPCAS).

She draws on her experience as a medical practitioner to sensitise people about HIV/AIDS and other related health issues.

Promoting education

On December 24, 2024, the Mama Luu Foundation organised a gathering in Akrofrom to fete basic school pupils and present them with educational materials, including pens, mathematical sets, school bags, and exercise books. Additionally, the pupils received an undisclosed amount of money as part of Mama Luu’s support.

Ahead of the awards ceremony, the students paraded through the principal streets of Akrofrom to announce their presence.

Three outstanding students were selected from various basic schools in the district, with the Ghana Education Service (GES) playing a pivotal role in compiling the list of awardees.

"Education is the key. And more importantly, I can't wait to see school children, especially young girls, excel in life," Mama Luu told this reporter.

"Already, I am seeing massive improvements in the studies of these young ones," she remarked.

She used the opportunity to appeal to other benevolent individuals and organisations to emulate such gestures, noting that the government alone could not shoulder all the country’s economic challenges.
