Hairdressers advised to upgrade themselves

The Central Regional President of the National Association of Beauticians and Hairdressers (NABH) of Ghana, Mrs Josephine Bennin, has advised operators in the industry to regularly upgrade themselves and stick to their professional ethics. 

She expressed regret that some members of the association refused to attend meetings, seminars and workshops, and pointed out that the association would soon crack the whip against those who refused to attend such programmes to upgrade themselves.

Mrs Bennin was speaking at the opening of a six-day training workshop held at Enyan Denkyira in the Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam District in the Central Region.

The workshop, which brought together 70 hairdressers and beauticians from all the districts in the region, was partly sponsored by the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET).

Mrs Bennin pointed out that the work of a hairdresser and a beautician was not only learning how to braid hair, but also applying professional touch to the job, indicating that the workshop would offer the participants the opportunity to learn basic entrepreneurial and managerial skills.

She noted that the region was lagging behind in so many activities due to the members’ attitude towards meetings and workshops and expressed the hope that the members would have a change of attitude after the programme.

She implored the participants to take the workshop seriously, adding that: “You need to upgrade yourselves.” 

The workshop facilitator, Mr Billy Bonsu, said the hairdressers should go the extra mile to learn entrepreneurial and managerial skills to enhance their work, noting that the participants would be taken through some safety practices during the workshop.

Ms Comfort Enukumah, one of the participants, said she would make use of the knowledge she would gain to the benefit of her apprentices.

She said the workshop was an opportunity for her to learn new techniques so that she could compete with other hairdressers in the country.

Another participant, Madam Mary Essel, also expressed appreciation to the organisers of the workshop, and said it was time the association disciplined the recalcitrant members who disregarded the association’s code of ethics.
