Ngleshie Alata Paramount Chief inducted into House of Chiefs

The Paramount Chief of the Ngleshie Alata Traditional Area, Oblempong Dr Wetse Kojo II, has been officially inducted as a member of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs.

This follows a successful gazette at the National House of Chiefs.

A letter from the Registrar of the House, Enoch Addo, confirmed the development, stating that in accordance with the law, the chief now also assumed the role of the President of the Ngleshie Alata Traditional Council.

The letter was copied to key government institutions, including the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Ministry for the Interior, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, the Ga West Municipal Assembly, the Office of the Administrator of Stool Lands, and the Lands Commission.

Oblempong Dr Wetse Kojo II, known in private life as Prince Asharku Bruce Quaye, ascends to this role with a commitment to fostering peace and development within the traditional area.

Call for unity, progress

Following the induction, the Chief of Staff of the Ngleshie Alata Traditional Council, Daniel Nii Arde Tagoe, described the move as a significant step towards reconciliation and collective progress.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, he urged all stakeholders, particularly the seven divisional quarters of the James Town Paramount Stool -Adanse, Ajumanko, Trom, Adadentan, Anumansa, Plerno, and Afienaa—as well as the over 100 villages and chiefs under the traditional area, to rally behind the paramount chief.

“I appeal to all to come together and support the paramount chief in restoring the prominence of the Ngleshie Alata Stool. Litigation will not help anyone because it hampers development.

We should rather focus on the bigger picture, which is the paramount stool. This marks a new dawn, and we must all join forces to restore the past glory of the James Town Paramount Stool,” he stated.

He further emphasised that Oblempong Dr Wetse Kojo II’s induction into the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs cemented his authority within the traditional hierarchy, setting the stage for a new era of leadership and development.

The chief of staff also called for collective effort in rebuilding the paramountcy.

“I am appealing to the villages and revered traditional rulers to bury their differences, set aside personal interests, and unite for this rebuilding exercise,” Mr Tagoe stated.

Background

The Ngleshie Alata Traditional Area, with James Town as its historical and administrative centre, is one of the oldest and most significant Ga traditional states in Ghana.

The area is known for its rich cultural heritage, including the annual Homowo and Odwira festivals, as well as its historical ties with the British colonial administration.

However, in recent years, chieftaincy disputes and land conflicts have hindered the area’s development.

The induction of Oblempong Dr Wetse Kojo II is expected to bring much-needed stability, foster unity among various factions, and pave the way for renewed development initiatives.
