Akan Constituency parliamentary candidates engage in debate

The parliamentary candidates of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mary Yawa Aforla and Mustapha Tassah, respectively, yesterday, engaged in a debate organised by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) for the Akan Constituency in the Oti Region.

Conspicuously absent at the debate, though, was the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate and Member of Parliament for the Akan Constituency, Yao Gomado.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Oti Regional Deputy Director of the NCCE, Setriakor Gagakuma, expressed concern about the absence of the MP, Mr Gomado, at the debate, which focused on issues affecting the constituency.

Mr Gagakuma said politics was the competition of ideas and the one with the best ideas to improve the standard of living of the people would carry the day.

Servant

He was of the view that the one voted for by the people should see him or herself as a servant of the people but not as their lord.

The Kadjebi District Director of the NCCE, Daniel Agbesi Latsu, said the platform offered by the NCCE was to enhance the electoral process in the country.

He said the debate was not meant to produce a winner or a loser, but rather to enable the candidates to voice their ideas, which would enable the people to make their choice of who should represent them.

“Please, let us sustain the peace in the country by abstaining from violent acts before, during and after the December general elections,” he said.

Individuals, not parties

The Parliamentary Candidate for NPP, Mustapha Tassah, said the votes should not be based on political parties but rather on the individual.

“It is not the political party that will come to develop your area but it is the individual,” he said, calling on the public to vote for the individual who was capable of assisting them to solve their challenges.

The Parliamentary Candidate for LPG, Mary Aforla, said a vote for her would make her the first female in the Akan Constituency. Ms Mary Aforla, however, said she was ready to throw her weight behind anyone who emerged winner in the elections.

She said when voted for, she was ready to ensure that the Akan Constituency was developed to halt the youth from migrating to look for greener pastures.
