20th surveyors week, AGM launched

The Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS) has launched a week-long programme to project the profession and its prospects for national development. 

The 20th surveyors' week and 56th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of GhIS, which commenced with a health screening last Thursday (March 8), would provide a platform to exchange ideas, develop innovative solutions and influence policies that drive sustainable

It  is expected to chart a path on the role of surveyors in addressing illegal mining, land litigation, among others, through various research papers and engagements.

It is being observed on the theme, “Harnessing and projecting surveying competencies: a catalyst for national development and embracing new opportunities”.

The President of GhIS, Dr Anthony Arko Adjei, who launched the programme, said it would feature a presidential lecture which would consider a research paper on a topic relating to national development concerns from the professional perspective.

In addition to that, he said the discussions would focus on the following key areas such as leveraging digitalisation to address land disputes.

Dr Adjei said with approximately 80 per cent of legal disputes in the country linked to land conflicts, the institution would advocate enhanced land governance through digital land records, transparent policies and ADR mechanisms.

On urbanisation and infrastructure, the President said as Ghana's urban population was projected to exceed 65 per cent by 2030, it was important for surveyors to leverage cutting-edge geospatial technologies and cost-estimation methods to support the development of resilient cities..

Digital transformation

He encouraged professionals to embrace digital transformation and continuous learning to remain at the forefront of the industry’s advancement.

“GhIS remains committed to strengthening partnerships with key government agencies, including the Lands Commission and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, to enhance the surveying profession's impact on national policy and infrastructure planning.

“Additionally, the institution is intensifying its advocacy for the Surveying Council Bill, a regulatory framework essential for maintaining professional standards, eliminating unqualified practitioners and safeguarding industry integrity,” he said.
