Development projects in La Nkwantanang progressing
The La Nkwantanang Municipal Assembly is to benefit from a World Bank sponsored sanitation programme for the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area. The programme will help to address sanitation challenges in the municipality, particularly in educational institutions.
The Chief Executive for the La Nkwantanang Municipal Assembly, Mr Franklin P. Anku, disclosed this in an interview with the Daily Graphic following the third Ordinary Meeting of the municipal assembly. The meeting was called to draw a budget for 2015, fix fees for the ensuing year and design a medium term development plan (MTDP).
He said a number of initiatives being carried out by the assembly were steadily progressing, and commended contractors for working as expected.
According to him, a number of roads had been sealed and gravelled, and drainage and culvert works had been completed, making transportation easy.
Health issue
He said the assembly was paying attention to sanitation in the municipality in view of the outbreak of cholera in the Accra metropolis.
“Individuals and the community at large must pay particular attention to issues on health and sanitation and the municipality will not go soft on this.
“The assembly is making efforts at the moment to establish an isolation centre for people affected by cholera and other communicable diseases,’’ he said.
Mr Anku said education on cholera was being heightened in order to give residents knowledge of the disease and to also effect behavioural change to reduce the infection rate.
Assembly’s finances
The MCE said considering the fact that the assembly did not depend solely on the District Assembly Common Fund to finance the development of the area, the need had arisen for the assembly to look for other sources of income to fund its programmes.
According to him, the assembly estimated to receive GH¢ 2,218,100 from internally generated funds. He said as of September 30, it had managed to collect 84 per cent of the sum, amounting to GH¢ 1,864,296.99.
He had also urged assembly members to help the taskforce established to collect revenue in the municipality to collect rates in the difficult areas.
He said the revenue that was received was used for both recurrent and capital expenditure, all in the interest of the community. He said the assembly was able to use internally generated funds to purchase a Nissan Urvan bus.
