Ashaiman court remands 8 landguards

Eight suspected land-guards have been remanded in prison custody by the Ashaiman Circuit Court.

The eight, who are expected to reappear in court on October 12, 2017, have been charged with tending to disturb public peace, causing harm and unlawful damage.

A statement issued by the Tema Regional Police Public Affairs Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Joseph Benefo Darkwah, named the suspects as Alidu Yusif, Shefiu Abubakar, Fuseini Moro, Mohammed Kasim, Abubakar Alhassan, Alhassan Eliasu, Kwaraya Kudumorow and Abubakar Mohammed.

A ninth suspect, Osman Nchamber, is currently receiving treatment at the Tema General Hospital for injuries he sustained during clashes at the site.

Confrontation

The statement said the suspects were arrested at Appolonia on September 21, 2017.

It said the eight suspects belonged to two different factions litigating over a parcel of land at Appolonia and explained that one faction allegedly went to the land to post a court order on some illegal structures.

It said while that faction was there, the other group of landguards went to the site, collected the tools and pulled down three structures which it claimed were illegally constructed.

That, it said, resulted in a confrontation between the two groups.

"They fought and wounded each other," the statement added.

Injuries

It said based on a report that was made to the police, the suspects were arrested.

It said the police, on arrival at the scene, noticed that Nchamber had been seriously wounded and had to be rushed to the Tema General Hospital where he was seeking medical attention.

The statement said the other suspects were arrested and, after investigations, they were arraigned before the Ashaiman Circuit Court.
