SDD-UBIDS matriculates its first batch students into its law school
The Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS) has matriculated its first batch of 105 students into its School of Law at Wa in the Upper West Region.
The matriculation ceremony also coincided with the launch of the School of Law.
Addressing the ceremony, the Deputy Minister of Justice, Madam Diana Dapaah, told the matriculated students to disabuse their minds of being lawyers because they had gained entry into the law school.
That, Madam Dapaah said, depended on hard work.
She, therefore, challenged them to put up their best and as such, justify the call for the opening of more law schools and commended the SDD-UBIDS for establishing the school which would benefit students in the northern part of the country.
Madam Dapaah called on them to aim at coming out with good grades since quality lawyers were crucial in society.
She said there was a need for the Legal Council Law to be looked at because it had remained unchanged since it was enacted in 1960.
The Vice-Chancellor, Philip Duku Osei, gave the assurance that the students had come to the right place, saying that the university had collaborated with other universities to ensure that although new, “we will start our journey running instead of crawling”.
The Chairman of the Council, Kweku Paintsil, noted that the law course provided a gateway into the job market since it offered them the opportunity to venture into other fields.
He, therefore, challenged them to work to erase the perception that lawyers were dishonest, quoting the popular saying that, “lawyers will be buried face down”.
Mr Paintsil said the university had some challenges with infrastructural facilities, which were being worked on to give them the conducive environment to enhance teaching and learning among the lecturers and students.
