Programme to guide children on road use introduced
The School Area Road Safety Assessment And Improvement (SARSAI) programme designed to guide children on how to use the road and provide safe crossing infrastructure to prevent accidents has been introduced at the Christ Home School at Kwashieman in Accra.
As part of the programme, a footpath has been constructed outside the school alongside a zebra crossing and two extra speed humps to slow down oncoming vehicles.
At the event, the students were taken through practical safety tips and the precautions to take before crossing the road.
The SARSAI programme was introduced in the school by Amend International, in collaboration with the FIA Foundation, a UK charity organisation and the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC).
As part of the initiative to eradicate the dangers associated with child road safety, they identified schools which were at high risk of road traffic injuries among the student population.
The Ambassador for the Global Initiative for Child Health and Mobility, Ms Zoleka Mandela, said it was wrong that some schools did not have the necessary protection; safe crossing, speed humps and safe footpaths for students.
“As adults, it is our duty to make sure you are protected and our leaders and government must act urgently,” she added.
Some of the agencies that will partner with Amend International and SARSAI are UNICEF, Bloomerg Initiative for Global Road Safety and Puma Energy Foundation.
