People and Places: The Aburi Hills

Located in the Akwapim South District of the Eastern Region, the Aburi Hills are a breathtaking range that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, rich cultural heritage and exciting outdoor activities.

As part of the Akwapim-Togo Range stretching from Ghana to Togo, the hills boast lush green forests, sparkling waterfalls and scenic valleys.

The area is home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, including rare bird species, butterflies and plants. One of the main attractions is the Aburi Botanical Gardens established in 1890.

The gardens showcase a wide range of plant species from Ghana and around the world, inviting visitors to stroll through, admire the beautiful flowers and trees and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

At an elevation of approximately 450 metres (1,476 feet) above sea level, the hills are known for their cooler and more temperate climate compared to the coastal regions, making them a popular retreat.

Adventure seekers can explore several hiking and trekking trails that cater to different fitness levels and experiences.

These trails wind through lush forests, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and valleys.

The Aburi Hills hold significant cultural and historical importance, with several traditional villages such as Aburi, Kitase and Peduase where visitors can experience the rich cultural heritage of the Akwapim people.

The Peduase Lodge, a presidential lodge established by Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, is also located in the Aburi Hills.

Originally built as a presidential retreat, Peduase Lodge is now used for government functions and conferences.

The recent construction of a dual carriageway carved through the rugged rocky formation has provided easy access to the Aburi Hills.

The road forms part of the National Highway 4 (N4) that starts at the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange in Accra.

The route from Ayi-Mensah, a town at the foot of the hills, which winds its way up the hills to Peduase, has become a popular destination for groups and individuals seeking exercise and a connection with nature.

The route offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside, making it an ideal way to exercise, get fresh air and enjoy nature's beauty.

The Aburi Hills are a major tourist destination in Ghana, attracting visitors with their natural beauty, historic sites and recreational opportunities.
