Single at Valentine?

Today is Valentine’s  Day -- a day of love, a day set aside for lovers to express their love to each other, exchange gifts and warm sentiments and share dates. This evening, thousands of lovebirds will be out on dates to spend quality time at restaurants, cinemas, pubs and, of course, in bed.

Doubtless, there will be thousands more young women and men who do not have dates and who may be losing out of the great celebration. One writer, Oyebade Obalola Jerr,  sums up the loss.  “Being dateless on Valentine’s Day can evoke feelings of loneliness and self-doubt, especially for those who are believers in the mythology of true love. But what is a person to do when he or she is feeling the chilling blues of being single instead of embracing the fiery desire of love?”

There could be a number of ways that single men and women can “endure” Valentine’s Day without worrying about chill.

If you are single because you have recently lost a lover and you wish you hadn’t, allow this to be a day of grieving. Do not pretend that it’s not a hard day. Crying is good on such occasions as it gives vent to pent up emotions and results in an emotional release. When no one is watching, let it all out.

Another way to survive the celebration if you don’t have a date is to play “sour grapes”.  Put it in your mind that Valentine’s Day is all commercial.

It is not about love and relationships; it is about the business of selling cards, flowers, chocolate, lingerie and jewellery. It is an occasion for restaurants and nightclubs to make money . Avoid the celebration and think about all the money you are saving.

You can set yourself a task that will not place you in the path of loving and cooing couples. Even if you usually like going out alone, do something else on Valentine’s Day. For example you can do a sporting activity or pay a visit to someone you havent seen in a while who is likely to be also alone. Don’t be left out because you are “gnashing”.

If you are single today and you wish you were not, start now to think about what has been in the way of you creating the relationship you want. Look inside yourself and ask why on this special day, you remain single. Find ways to work on becoming the person your dream partner would fall in love with.

Again, the fact that you are single should not make you dread valentine’s day because it reminds you of you single staus. It can be an opprtunity to express love to the most important person in your life which is you. Use the celebration to honour some of the qualities you cherish in your life and feel at ease with yourself becaue you are unique in your own way.

Often, people forget that the valentine celebartion is just for a period of 24 hours which will pass by just as season and time passes by, so why worry and feel pity for yourself because you don’t have anybody to say sweet words to you. Nobody can love you more than yourself so pamper yourself and say all the love words you want to hear on an occasion like this.
