Atongo and White Rabbits get busy

Atongo Zimba, the well-known player of the two-string ‘kologo’ instrument  and his White Rabbits band of Danish and Ghanaian musicians, have been  busy across the country since the beginning of this year.

After a series of hectic rehearsals,  the group honoured a gig at the +233 Jazz Bar and Grill in Accra on March 7 before moving to Tamale in the Northern Region where they  played last Sunday, March 12, at the Discovery Hotel.

The essence of the live gigs is to promote Atongo’s new seven-track album titled, From The Jungle To The City.

The group will be in action at Comme Ci Comme Ca in Bolgatanga, Upper East Region on Saturday, March 19, before returning to Accra for more gigs and formal launch of the album.

“I have been working abroad most of the time so it is refreshing to play at home again and give my fans here something to cheer about,” said Atongo, whose No Beer In Heaven song from his 2005 Savannah Breeze album was a big hit in Africa, South America and Europe.

His album, Barefoot in the Sand album was nominated "African CD of the Year" in 2007 by Amsterdam television.

The White Rabbits is a pack of versatile players who have been familiar with Atongo’s music for several years.   Abdulai  Issakah  on electric bass, is an experienced guy. Acts he has played with over the years include Boom Talents, Border Guards Band, Ranches, Alpha Waves, Kris Bediiako and Sumanguru.

Siisi ‘Yoyoo’ France on drums has also played with many big names including Bessa Simons, Rocky Dawuni and Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

“It’s a lot of fun playing with all the guys. We have plans for gigs in Europe as well so being on the road now is a perfect prelude to that,” Atongo pointed out.
