2016 DJ Awards would be best yet

Organisers of the Ghana DJ Awards, Merqury Quaye has promised that this year’s edition of the awards scheme would be the best yet.

In an interview with Showbiz on Sunday, February 21, Merqury said the response from the public has been exceptional with respect to participation, branding and the organisation of the award ceremony itself.

He said his outfit had increased education nationwide about the awards, hence the interest the award scheme had generated across the country.

“The response we have received from the public so far has been exceptional. Last year, we received about 1,700 entries and this year, we had over 6,028 people submitting their nomination forms,” he said.

Merqury Quaye dismissed criticism that the award was disproportionately balanced in favour of DJs and radio personalities from Accra and Kumasi to the disadvantage of DJs from the other regions of the country.

“I think those complaining about the regional compositions have not taken a closer look at the list of nominations.

“We have a fair representation from all the regions of the country and people are only raising issues simply because they are unfamiliar with some of the names on the list,” he said.

He urged DJs across the country to focus on personal branding in order to increase their appeal nationwide.

“Just as artistes do not focus only on releasing songs, being a DJ should not only be about playing songs on radio and parties, it’s also about branding oneself,” he said.

He promised that the Ghana DJ Awards which comes off on Friday, 18 March at the Accra International Conference Centre, will be an exciting event hosted by a surprise international DJ.
